Decisiveness — The Strength We Pray For Every Day

Decisiveness.

The strength we pray for every day.

Not courage — we often confuse the two. Courage is feeling the fear and acting anyway. Decisiveness is something deeper. It is the moment you stop negotiating with yourself and simply — move.

Most people never get there.

What science tells us.

We make over 70 decisions every day. Most are automatic. But the ones that matter — the ones about our lives, our relationships, our direction — those are the ones that paralyse us.

Research shows that 3 in 4 adults say their biggest regrets come not from bad decisions — but from things they wanted to do and never got around to. Not from wrong choices. From no choice at all.

Inaction is the greatest source of regret in human life.

And neuroscience tells us something surprising: decisive people are not more accurate, faster, or better at making choices than indecisive ones. The only difference is that they are more confident in their decisions.

Decisiveness is not intelligence. It is not talent.

It is trust. In yourself. In the process. In something greater than your own fear.

What the ancient traditions tell us.

Joshua 1:9 — The Bible:
"Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."

Joshua was being asked to lead an entire people into unknown territory. He had no guarantees. No certainty of outcome. Just a direction and a command. And God did not say "wait until you are ready." God said "go — and I will be with you wherever you go."

Decisiveness, in the Biblical tradition, is not acting without fear. It is acting without waiting for the fear to disappear first. Because it never does. The courage comes from moving — not from standing still until you feel safe.

Bhagavad Gita — Chapter 2, Verse 47:
"You have the right to perform your duty, but never to the fruits of action. Let not the fruits of action be your motive, nor let your attachment be to inaction."

Most people cannot decide because they are trying to guarantee the result before they begin. They want certainty before commitment. But certainty never comes first.

Act. Trust. Release.

Taoism — Tao Te Ching, Chapter 8:
"The highest good is like water. Water benefits ten thousand things and does not compete."

Water does not hesitate at an obstacle. It does not argue with the shape of the riverbed. It finds the way through — naturally, without force. True decisiveness is not the power to push through everything. It is the wisdom to flow in the direction that is already yours.

Indecision is often the signal that we are trying to force a direction that does not belong to us.

Sufism — Rumi:
"As you start to walk on the way, the way appears."

You do not need to see the whole path before you take the first step. Clarity comes from movement, not from stillness. You cannot think your way into decisiveness. You can only act your way into it.

Gospel of Thomas — Saying 45:
"A good person brings good things out of what has been stored up."

Decisiveness is not created in the moment of decision. It is stored. Built. Accumulated through every small act of honoring your own knowing — every time you listened to your own voice instead of silencing it.

And then there is the deepest layer.

Decisiveness is not just psychology. It is not just courage.

It is faith.

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
— Proverbs 3:5-6

When your heart leads you somewhere — and you cannot explain it logically, cannot justify it to others, cannot guarantee the outcome — that is not irrationality. That is God speaking through you.

And James 1:6 says the opposite with equal clarity:
"The one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind — double-minded and unstable in all they do."

The prayer we say every day — for strength, for direction, for the courage to move — is already answered the moment we choose to trust the voice that has been speaking to us all along.

If your heart leads you — God leads you.

So what is decisiveness, really?

It is not the absence of doubt.
It is not the guarantee of a good outcome.
It is not fearlessness.

It is the moment you trust yourself enough to move — even without certainty. Even without permission. Even without knowing exactly where you will land.

The greatest regrets in life are not the things we tried and failed. They are the things we never tried at all.

Fear says: wait.
Decisiveness says: begin.

Fear says: what if it goes wrong?
Decisiveness says: what if it goes right?

And in the space between those two questions — your life is waiting.

Either way — you have nothing to lose. And nothing is final. Sometimes the only thing left… is to take a step.
