I Didn’t Lose My Way All at Once. I Disappeared Slowly.

And no… it didn’t start with pain.
It started with the life I believed I was living the right way.
I was someone who tried. Who thought things through. Who chose carefully. I didn’t make chaotic mistakes. I made calculated choices.
And that was the problem.
Because in those “right” choices… somewhere along the way, I had started to exclude myself.
I remember moments. Small ones. Almost invisible.
When someone asked me something… and I said “yes” immediately. Not because I wanted to. But because it was easier. And in that same moment… I felt a slight tightening in my chest. I ignored it.
When I lay in bed at night… and the same conversation kept replaying in my head. What I said. What I should have said. How I should have reacted. Again. And again. I knew it was exhausting me. But I couldn’t stop.
When I postponed something important to me… because “now is not the right time.” When I chose others… and then sat alone with a strange silence inside. Not emptiness. Worse. The absence of me.
And the hardest part was… I knew. There were moments when I clearly felt: this isn’t true for me. But I did it anyway.
I told myself: “This is how it should be.” “Not now.” “It’s important to hold on to this.”
To hold on to the relationship. To hold on to the job. To hold on to the image. To hold on to the life I had been building.
And here, without naming it… fear was already there. Not as panic. As a quiet dependency: not to lose.
There is a moment I will never forget.
I was standing there, staring at my phone. I didn’t want to write that message. Everything in me was saying “no.” But I wrote it. I sent it. And in the second after… I felt something inside me close. Not dramatically. Quietly. Permanently.
And I kept going. I lived like that. Day after day. Right. Structured. Controlled.
Until life did what it always does. It put me in a situation where I could no longer maintain any of it.
I didn’t expect the moment. No one does. Something appeared. Or someone. And suddenly… everything I thought was stable began to shake. The fear I had ignored… became real. The possibility of losing… was no longer a thought. It was here.
And that’s when something much deeper than the situation broke. My perception broke. Of life. Of the “right” way. Of who I was.
I stood there… and for the first time, I couldn’t tell myself: “I’ll fix this.” Because there was nothing to fix. There was something to see.
That I hadn’t lost something outside of me. I had lost my connection with myself… long before that. And that everything I had been trying to hold on to… had been built on that misalignment.
That was the moment. Not the beginning. The end. The moment you can no longer go back to the way you were living. Not because you don’t want to. But because you see it. Truly.
And this is the truth that changed my life.
It’s not loss that breaks us. It’s the realization… that we’ve been living against ourselves to avoid it. And once you see it… you can’t continue the same way. Even if you try.
And here is something I never said out loud. I wasn’t actually afraid of the loss itself. I was afraid of what would remain if it happened. The empty space. The silence. The question I wouldn’t be able to avoid:
Who am I… without all of this?
And that’s exactly why I kept going. Holding on. Controlling. Convincing myself that everything was fine. Even when it wasn’t. Even when I could feel myself disappearing.
And the scariest part was… from the outside, everything looked stable. There was no breakdown. No drama. No moment where everything collapsed in front of everyone. There was only a quiet misalignment. Between the life I was living… and the person I was within it.
And that misalignment kept growing. Until I could no longer hold it together. Not because I wasn’t trying hard enough. But because you cannot live against yourself forever.
And when everything finally reaches that point… you don’t just lose something outside of you. You lose the last illusion that you can keep living the same way.
And right there… the truth begins. Not the one you want to hear. But the one you can no longer avoid.
That life doesn’t fall apart all at once. It drifts out of alignment. Slowly. Quietly. Until one day… you can no longer not see it.
And once you see it… there is no going back.
This is where it began for me.
